Insurance driving records and trip visibility
What insurance driving apps can record and share
State Farm and Progressive illustrate how insurance driving programs collect routes and behavior, show trip data to policy roles and retain information beyond a phone display.

A driving program can create a route history
State Farm's current Drive Safe & Save FAQ describes the State Farm app, GPS and phone sensors working with a Bluetooth beacon. Recording can occur without opening the app. Its trip maps cover routes and driving events; the beacon itself does not contain GPS. Policy roles can change who sees a trip map
The same FAQ says named insureds can see trips from all devices for the past 30 days, while additional drivers see trips recorded on their own phone. This is a display window, not a statement that the insurer deletes every older record. State Farm: current Drive Safe and Save app, trip visibility and controls
Snapshot collects location even where destination is not a rating factor
Progressive's FAQ says Snapshot collects location, driving amount, timing and behavior, plus phone-use information for the mobile app. It says location may be used for underwriting even though where a person drives is not used for the personalized Snapshot result. These are different uses. Progressive: Snapshot collection, opt-out and pricing limits
Phone collection and policy summaries are different views
Progressive's linked mobile terms describe background GPS, time, phone-use and sensor data, with derived braking, acceleration and route-regularity information. They say trip maps stay available on the collecting phone, while policy-account users can see limited summaries for participants without other phones' location data. Progressive: Snapshot mobile data, visibility and trip categorization
A short phone history is not the whole retention policy
Progressive's linked privacy statement, last updated 07-13-2020, distinguishes several days of app data on the phone from insurer retention, which the statement describes as indefinite. It also describes claims, service-provider and legally required disclosures. The document's date and program-specific scope matter. Progressive: Snapshot app data, retention and third parties
General customer records can remain after an account request
State Farm's privacy notice describes underwriting, claims and other customer-information uses. It says information can be retained for legal, auditing, regulatory and business needs, including after an app-account deletion request. Stopping a driving feature and deleting a customer account are not the same request. State Farm: customer information uses, retention and sharing choices
Questions and answers
Does the State Farm beacon itself have GPS?
Its FAQ says it does not; the paired app records route information. State Farm: current Drive Safe and Save app, trip visibility and controls
Does Snapshot collect the contents of calls and messages?
Its linked privacy statement says the app does not record communication contents or the identity of the person being contacted. Progressive: Snapshot app data, retention and third parties
Does every phone show all Snapshot participants' trip maps?
The linked terms distinguish individual-phone location data from limited policy summaries. Progressive: Snapshot mobile data, visibility and trip categorization

Public insurer documents checked 10-24-2026. These are two program examples. State, enrollment date, policy roles, app version and device type affect collection, pricing and controls. Progressive links terms updated 04-03-2023 and a privacy statement updated 07-13-2020; those dates are retained rather than presented as new policies.
