Digital tracking explained
How phone location data becomes a trail
App permissions and saved location history are different controls. Start by understanding what each one allows.

Permission is one part of the chain
A phone can give different apps different levels of location access. Google documents choices including access while an app is in use, background access and approximate location. Permission controls are a useful place to inspect which apps can obtain location. Google: Pixel location permissions
A documented location-data case
The FTC alleged that Gravy Analytics and Venntel collected and used location data without verifiable consent for commercial and government uses. The complaint described geofenced lists associated with healthcare visits and places of worship. A final order restricts sensitive-location uses, subject to limited exceptions. This describes that enforcement case, not every app. FTC: Gravy and Venntel order
Collection and saved history need separate attention
Google warns that turning off Timeline or deleting it does not necessarily remove location information saved through other settings, including Web & App Activity. Review the app permission and the account history separately. Google: Timeline controls
Questions and answers
Does turning off Timeline stop every location record?
No. Other Google settings and services can still save location information. Google: Timeline controls
Does this map show phone location databases?
The camera map does not establish which company has a particular person's phone history. Its mapped points are separate from the company practices described here.
