Review future and past payments separately
These paths were checked against Venmo's public help on 10-24-2026. The installed iPhone or Android app was not tested; labels can change. Review only an account legitimately controlled. Venmo: future and past payment privacy
- Open Me > Settings > Privacy. Review the future-payment audience and select Private if that matches the intended audience. Check the privacy indicator on a payment before sending it. This guide does not require sending a test payment. Venmo: future and past payment privacy
- In the same Privacy area, review the option for hiding past transactions. Venmo says earlier payments can only become more private. Treat this as a separate review from the future default. Venmo: future and past payment privacy
Review the friends list and searchability
- Open Me > Settings > Privacy > Friends List. Choose the intended visibility. Then review the separate toggle for appearing in other users' friends lists. These settings address social connections, not the visibility of every payment. Venmo: friends-list visibility
- Under Privacy > Find Me, review the On Venmo and On PayPal preferences where available. Searchability and payment audience are different controls. Check group membership too, because group activity remains visible to the group. Venmo: payment audiences and Find Me
Use the Teen Account controls when applicable
An authorized parent or guardian can open Me, use the arrow next to the name, select the Teen Account, then Overview > Manage Settings under Privacy. Review these choices with the teen. Private does not hide payments from the relevant parent or guardian, including the other teen's guardian when both participants use Teen Accounts. Venmo: Teen Account privacy scope
Review retention before choosing closure
Venmo's statement describes retaining relationship information for the relationship plus ten years, with possible longer legal or compliance needs. Public-feed controls do not remove transaction processing records. Use the current statement and official privacy contact for a question about a particular data category. Venmo: collected data and retention
If closure is the chosen outcome, first read Venmo's official balance and pending-transaction requirements. Its documented app route is Me > Settings > Account under Preferences > Close Venmo Account. Closing the personal profile also closes its business profile; business-only closure has a separate support route. Do not treat closure as a required step for changing feed privacy. Check unusual requests through a separate trusted route
Venmo recommends contacting the real person outside the app when a request seems unusual. Its help also says never to disclose a verification code to someone claiming to be support. Use the official help route for an unfamiliar payment or request; privacy settings alone do not authenticate a sender. Venmo: impersonation and public-feed risks
The FTC order requires accurate explanations of privacy choices, but it is not a current account audit. After reviewing the settings, check their displayed audience and keep the group and Teen Account exceptions in mind. No payment is necessary to read those choices.
