Payment and social data
How Venmo payments can expose social connections
Payment notes, names, timestamps and friends lists can reveal more than an amount. Understand Venmo audiences, group exceptions, Teen Accounts and retention.

A hidden amount can still leave a visible trail
Venmo says a Public or Friends payment shares its note, participants' names and timestamp. Amounts are hidden in the feed, but the payment participants can see them. Friends visibility includes both participants' friends. Group activity remains visible to group members regardless of the payment privacy setting. These scopes matter more than a simple public/private label. Venmo: payment audiences and Find Me
The friends list has separate visibility controls. Venmo says it can be visible to other users, friends only or private, with another choice for appearing in other users' lists. The service says device contacts have not automatically become friends since 2022; that does not mean an existing friends list is necessarily private. Venmo: friends-list visibility
The current controls differ from the old settlement story
Venmo's current help says it uses the more restrictive setting chosen by payment partners. It separately describes a future-payment default and making earlier payments more private. Changing a default should not be mistaken for checking the whole historical feed. Venmo: future and past payment privacy
The FTC announced final approval of a settlement over allegations that Venmo misled consumers about privacy controls and other practices. That historical action is not a test of the current app or proof that its old controls still work the same way. FTC: final settlement approval
The case timeline lists the final decision and order under May 24, 2018. That timeline date is different from the issuance date printed in the document. FTC: PayPal and Venmo case
The actual order is issued May 23, 2018. It bars covered misrepresentations about privacy controls and requires clear disclosures of transaction sharing and how to limit visibility. PayPal neither admitted nor denied the complaint allegations, with the stated jurisdictional exception. The order does not independently verify today's settings or compliance. Social visibility and company-held records are different
Venmo's privacy statement, effective November 17, 2025, describes transaction, identity, device and location information, plus data from listed third parties. Its retention section says information used for the ongoing relationship is stored for the relationship plus ten years, with possible longer legal or compliance retention. Making a payment private does not make it anonymous to the provider. Venmo: collected data and retention
Account closure also has practical consequences. Venmo's help says pending transactions must finish and remaining funds need attention before closing; access to funds ends on closure. Closing a personal profile also closes its business profile. Read the current official requirements before choosing closure as a privacy step. Venmo: account closure consequences
Teen Accounts and impersonation need their own checks
Venmo says Teen Account transactions start private, but the relevant parent or guardian can still see them. Teens can view privacy settings but cannot change them; the authorized adult manages them. Teen friends-list and search defaults are also different. Do not apply adult-account instructions as though they are identical. Venmo: Teen Account privacy scope
Venmo's scam guidance describes impersonators using visible payment relationships to make requests seem familiar. It recommends checking unusual requests with the real person outside Venmo and reviewing transaction and friends-list privacy. A familiar photo, name or shared contact is not sufficient proof that a request is authentic. Venmo: impersonation and public-feed risks
