What nearby file and contact sharing can expose

AirDrop, NameDrop and Quick Share use different audiences, transfer approvals and saved-copy behavior. Nearby sharing does not always mean a transfer stays nearby.

Being visible is different from sending a file

Apple's AirDrop support page separates choosing a nearby recipient from that person accepting a transfer. On supported iPhone software, Everyone for 10 Minutes reverts after the timer: to Contacts Only when signed in, or Receiving Off when not signed in. That timer describes visibility, not the lifetime of a received file. Apple: AirDrop audiences and timed visibility

An approved AirDrop relationship can outlast that timer

Apple's iOS 26 guide documents codes for non-contact sharing on version 26.2 or later. After the code exchange, sharing with that person can continue for 30 days without another code. The guide also says an initiated transfer can continue over the internet after leaving Bluetooth or Wi-Fi range. Apple: iOS 26 AirDrop codes, saved files and transfer scope

NameDrop offers a choice about sharing a card

The iOS 26 NameDrop guide describes choosing Share or Receive Only and selecting the fields to include. It says the same fields are selected by default next time. NameDrop sends new contact information; it does not update an existing contact. Proximity alone is not the whole documented sharing flow. Apple: iOS 26 NameDrop choices and controls

A NameDrop card is not the whole address book

Apple's personal-safety guide says NameDrop shares a name, a chosen phone number or email address, and Contact Poster information. It excludes other contact-card information such as a home address or birthday. This scope is specific to NameDrop, not every way of sending a contact. Quick Share has several visibility and delivery routes

Google says Android Quick Share's Receive screen makes a device visible to anyone nearby while that screen is open. Its separate visibility options include contacts and same-account devices. For devices without AirDrop support, the documented QR route to Apple devices uploads encrypted files to Google servers for a 24-hour download window. A Windows sharing window can leave a background receiver

Google says Quick Share for Windows can still receive while running in the background. Closing its window does not fully quit the app. Files received through its documented flow are saved under Downloads in a Quick Share folder. Same-Google-Account transfers are accepted automatically. Review each device that can receive

Apple's Secure AirDrop guide describes receiving choices on iPhone or iPad and discovery controls on Mac. A phone's setting is not a substitute for reviewing the Mac's AirDrop audience. The guide distinguishes sharing with nearby people, contacts or no one. Apple: reviewing AirDrop on phone and Mac
