Notification previews and connected screens

What phone notifications can reveal on other screens

Notification previews, a paired watch, Mac mirroring and Pixel notification history can expose different parts of an alert. Review each surface separately.

Conceptual illustration

An alert can contain part of the underlying message

Apple's iOS 26 guide says previews can include message or email text and calendar invitation details. It distinguishes preview visibility from an app's permission to send notifications. Count, Stack and List change the display layout; they are not the same control as Show Previews. Apple: iOS 26 previews and notification delivery

A locked Pixel has separate display and content controls

Google's Pixel lock-screen help distinguishes showing notifications from showing sensitive content. Its customization options also distinguish viewed icons, silent notifications and Compact View or Full list. Review the actual content setting rather than assuming a smaller layout hides the text. A watch is another place to review

Apple says an unlocked iPhone receives alerts instead of its paired Watch. When the phone is locked or asleep, alerts generally go to the Watch unless it is locked. Watch-only apps are an exception to phone routing. Short notification summaries can show an app name, icon and title even while the Watch is locked. Apple: Watch notification routing and privacy

A Mac can receive iPhone alerts after mirroring ends

Apple says a Mac connected through iPhone Mirroring can receive iPhone notifications and Live Activities even when mirroring is not in use and the phone is not nearby, provided the phone is on. Another connected Mac can receive them too. Native Mac-app notifications and incoming-call notifications have separate behavior. Apple: iPhone notifications and Live Activities on Mac

Dismissed alerts may remain in a local history

Google says Pixel notification history must be enabled first. When enabled, it lists notifications dismissed in the past 24 hours. That describes this phone feature; it is not a retention promise for the original message, the sending service or every Android device. Google: Pixel notification history

A quiet phone can still have notification settings to review

Google's Pixel help says Do Not Disturb silences most notifications, while battery-saving modes may stop or delay alerts. Its app notification switch is a separate control. The absence of a sound does not establish which app notification settings are enabled. Google: Pixel app notification controls
