Practical listening privacy
Review Spotify listening, playlist and social privacy
Check private sessions, activity sharing, playlist access, linked apps and messages separately. Understand data downloads and closure before making a change.

Review listening and profile controls separately
- On mobile, open profile picture > Settings and privacy > Privacy and Social. Review Listening activity, Recently played artists, and Followers & following individually. On desktop, use profile picture > Settings > Social. Use the mobile control for follower-list visibility. Spotify: current social and private-session controls
- For a temporary pause, review Private session and its six-hour or app-restart reset. For an ongoing sharing choice, inspect the underlying activity toggle. Spotify advises users under 18 to seek a guardian's advice before changing these settings. Spotify: current social and private-session controls
Check playlist access as well as profile placement
Open the playlist's three-dot menu and inspect its privacy choice. Spotify documents Make private, with Make public for reversing it. Review individual shared access and collaboration if present. The access guide distinguishes these controls from simply publishing a playlist to a profile. Spotify: playlist privacy and individual access
To change profile placement, the playlist menu offers Add to profile or Remove from profile. For new playlists, review the separate profile and public-playlist controls in Privacy and social. Check existing playlists individually; a new-playlist preference should not be treated as a review of old sharing links. Spotify: profile display and shared playlists
Review connected apps and messaging
Use the Apps page linked in Spotify's official help. Review each connection and use Remove Access for an app no longer wanted. Check the other service's own privacy controls for information it already received; this Spotify control alone does not establish what that service retains. Spotify: linked applications
On mobile, Spotify documents profile picture > Settings and privacy > Privacy and social > Social features > Messages to turn messaging off where available. For an individual contact, inspect the chat header and three-dot menu for Block user. Clearing the chat only removes its displayed conversation from the user's view, not the other participant's. Spotify: messaging choices and clearing chats
Review provider-held data and advertising separately
Spotify's Account Privacy page provides its Download your data tool. The data-rights help describes separate choices for tailored advertising on the free service and certain Facebook-provided information. Read the displayed choice and account scope before confirming; these are different from the social settings inside the app. Spotify: data copies and privacy choices
If a copy is needed, use the export guide to distinguish account data from extended streaming history and technical logs. Read the supplied field guide and keep downloaded files private. Their timestamps, playback and network-related fields can make an export more revealing than the visible profile. Spotify: data export fields
Read closure consequences before choosing deletion
Spotify's help distinguishes canceling Premium from closing the account and requesting deletion. Closure loses access to purchased audiobooks and future live-event tickets. It describes a seven-day reactivation link, after which reactivation ends and the data-deletion process begins. This is a process start, not a promise that every record disappears on day seven. Use the official closure page only if that is the intended outcome. Spotify: closure and reactivation consequences
The United States policy treats Managed Accounts and Spotify Kids under their own notices except where those notices incorporate it. Use the correct account type and the applicable retention section when asking what remains after closure. Spotify: United States data and retention policy
