Identify the actual conversation mode

For Telegram, its FAQ distinguishes ordinary Cloud Chats from Secret Chats. A Secret Chat is a separate device-specific conversation, not a conversion of the existing cloud history. Logging out loses Secret Chats on that device. Telegram: Cloud Chats and Secret Chats

Review iCloud protection and recovery requirements

Apple's setup guidance requires compatible software on all signed-in devices and an alternative recovery method, such as a recovery contact or recovery key. Apple cannot recover the end-to-end encrypted data for you without an available recovery method. Managed Apple Accounts and child accounts are not eligible. Review Signal backup choices before changing them

Signal's current help locates backup controls in Signal Settings, then Backups. Read the displayed archive type and recovery instructions. Turning off and deleting Secure Backups removes the archive; it is not a harmless way to inspect a setting. Signal: secure backup help

2. If on-device backups are used, identify where the files are stored and which older copies remain. Signal explains that the on-device recovery key can decrypt past backups, while its hosted service has a different rotating-key design. Review the primary device's linked-device list

Signal documents a linked-device list on the primary device. Its help explains that linking can synchronize chats and recent media; inspect the list as a separate part of the review. Signal: linked-device review

1. Open Signal Settings, then Linked devices, on the primary device and check the entries you expect. The help links separate unlinking instructions. Viewing the list does not require scanning a new pairing QR code or adding another device. Signal: linked-device review

Treat recipient copies as another limit

Telegram's FAQ says screenshot detection cannot guarantee that a recipient has not captured a message, including with another camera. A disappearing-message or screenshot feature should not be treated as proof that no recipient copy exists. Telegram: Cloud Chats and Secret Chats
