Practical app privacy review
Read app privacy disclosures alongside permission activity
Read App Store and Google Play disclosures, check their definitions and compare them with privacy reports and permission dashboards without overreading a single label.

Read categories and purposes in the App Store
Open the app's product page and review App Privacy. Apple distinguishes information linked to an identity from information used for its defined tracking purposes. Read the developer's policy for the version or use case that applies. A single category is not a complete description of every feature. Apple: App Store privacy categories and developer reporting
Check what a disclosure category means
Apple's developer guidance includes app functionality as a collection purpose, alongside analytics and advertising. Read the purpose attached to a data type. Optional disclosure has multiple conditions; do not assume that any optional feature automatically falls outside the label. The definition of collection also differs from simple permission access on the phone. Apple: privacy-label definitions and disclosure conditions
Expand Google Play's Data safety details
Google documents opening the app listing > Data safety > See details. Review collection, sharing, optional uses and the linked policy. Read the stated exceptions before interpreting no sharing as no transfer. An independent security-review badge answers a different question from whether the disclosure is complete. Google: reading Data safety and its exceptions
Use the developer's explanation for unresolved differences
Google makes developers responsible for their declarations, including third-party code. Compare the policy with the stated feature and data purpose. An unexplained discrepancy is a reason to seek clarification; it is not enough, on its own, to declare a particular company has sold data or broken the law. Google: developer responsibility, included third-party code and Play review
Review an existing Apple activity report privately
Apple documents Settings > Privacy & Security > App Privacy Report. Recording starts after activation, so it is not retroactive. Turning it off clears the device's report. Read the result alongside the app's policy and label. Apple: App Privacy Report
Review the Android permission timeline
Google documents Settings > Security and Privacy, or Privacy > Privacy dashboard. A second Privacy menu may appear. Select a permission, then an app to review or update its permission. Use the documented Android-version window; do not treat the timeline as a complete account of server-held data. Google: privacy dashboard
