Practical QR and short-link privacy

Review QR destinations and short-link privacy before opening

Check the displayed destination, verify unexpected requests independently and understand the limits of redirect analytics before treating a code or click report as proof.

Pause at the displayed camera link

Apple's iOS 26 guide documents Camera in Photo mode showing a link that can be tapped. Read what is displayed before choosing to open it. The documented built-in camera flow provides a way to handle these codes without installing a new QR reader merely for this guide. Apple iPhone User Guide: iOS 26 camera QR link handling

Verify an unexpected request through a known route

The FTC advises checking a QR destination for a lookalike address and avoiding unexpected email or text codes, especially urgent requests. If a claimed account or delivery problem seems plausible, use a website or contact route already known to be real. Do not enter credentials or payment information simply to test an unfamiliar QR destination. FTC: inspect QR destinations and verify unexpected requests

Do not rely on a familiar printed design alone

Bitly's dynamic-code documentation allows changing the destination without reprinting. Recheck where a code leads when using it again, rather than assuming its unchanged appearance proves an unchanged destination. This is a capability of the described dynamic products, not an allegation that a particular code was altered. Bitly: dynamic destinations and separate products

Consider redirect-provider records separately from the destination

Bitly's policy describes collecting interaction data, including IP-derived location and device settings, on its products. Review that provider layer as well as the destination's policy. A branded short-link domain does not by itself establish that there is no redirect provider involved. Bitly: link and QR interaction data collection

Read the scope before interpreting a scan dashboard

Bitly's QR help describes time, location, browser and operating-system reports and the connection to short-link metrics. If a scan report is used to explain activity, check which code, period and metric it covers. Do not turn a total into an unsupported claim about a named person. Allow for automated link checks in click reports

Bitly documents bots, extensions and email scanners expanding short URLs. Treat a reported engagement as a provider-defined event, not conclusive proof that someone intentionally visited or read the page. A tool that expands a link is itself making a request; this guide does not promise an anonymous link-preview test. Bitly: link expansion, automated traffic and count limits

Keep broad device and source labels in context

Bitly says device-type reporting omits brands and models. Interpret categories such as mobile phone or unknown at that level of detail. Avoid combining a broad category with unrelated information and presenting it as a verified identity or a precise physical-device finding. Bitly: device categories and missing hardware details
