QR codes, short links and redirect records

What QR codes and short links can record

A QR-linked redirect can create provider records before the destination page, while scan dashboards and click counts have limits as evidence of a person’s actions.

Conceptual illustration

A camera link is an entry point to content

Apple's selected iOS 26 guide describes pointing Camera at a QR code in Photo mode and tapping the link shown at the bottom. It also documents Code Scanner in Control Center. Recognizing a code and choosing the displayed link are distinct parts of that documented camera flow. Apple iPhone User Guide: iOS 26 camera QR link handling

A redirect provider can collect interaction information

Bitly's privacy policy says interactions with its links, QR codes and other products can collect IP addresses, IP-derived location, referring services, access time, browser and operating-system information, cookies and mobile advertising identifiers. Its policy covers branded domains as well as bit.ly. These are provider disclosures, not a claim that every printed QR code uses Bitly. Bitly: link and QR interaction data collection

A printed code can keep working while its destination changes

Bitly documents dynamic QR codes whose destination URL can be updated without reprinting. The familiar appearance of that kind of printed code does not establish that it still points to the same destination. Bitly and QRCG by Bitly are separate products, with separate accounts and features. Bitly: dynamic destinations and separate products

Scan reports can show timing and device categories

Bitly describes QR metrics for day, location, browser and operating system, subject to the account's available history. If the associated short link has also been shared, its metrics include scan data. The report's scope matters when interpreting a total. Bitly: QR scan metrics and linked short URLs

A device category is not a complete hardware identity

Bitly's device guide says its device-type data does not include brands, models or other hardware details. Categories include mobile phone, desktop, tablet and unknown. A broad device label in that report should not be read as a specific person's device identifier. Bitly: device categories and missing hardware details

A click count is not proof that a person read a page

Bitly says it counts a click when a short link expands to its long URL. Bots, browser extensions and email spam checkers can expand a link without taking a person to the destination. Its engagement totals can also combine link clicks, QR scans and page-button clicks. Bitly: link expansion, automated traffic and count limits

A direct referrer does not mean no tracking

Bitly places email, text-message and pasted or typed link traffic in a Direct referrer category. QR traffic has its own category. Direct describes how the referrer is classified, rather than proving that an interaction left no provider record. Bitly: QR and direct referrer categories

An unexpected code can point to a deceptive site

The FTC warns about substituted parking codes and unexpected account or delivery messages that pressure people to scan. It advises inspecting the destination URL before opening and using a known company route to verify an unexpected request. A familiar logo beside a code does not settle who controls the destination.
