Start with the connection and destination
- Check for HTTPS in the address bar before sharing information. Keep the browser and operating system updated. The FTC also recommends strong passwords and two-factor authentication. FTC: HTTPS and public Wi-Fi
Firefox desktop: review secure DNS
- Open the Firefox menu, then Settings and Privacy & Security (or Privacy and security). Find DNS over HTTPS and its Advanced settings. Read the listed provider, protection level and status. The current Mozilla instructions show both label variants. Mozilla: DNS protection settings
- Read the fallback behavior before choosing a level. Default protection can fall back to system DNS and respects specified VPN, parental-control and enterprise conditions. Max protection instead warns when secure resolution fails. Follow the device or network administrator's policy. Mozilla: DNS protection settings
iPhone: review Private Relay if already available
- For an existing eligible iCloud+ subscription, Apple's iOS 27 guide shows Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Private Relay. Turn it on for each device where it is wanted. Regional availability applies. Apple: iPhone relay controls
- Open IP Address Location to review Maintain General Location versus Use Country and Time Zone. The latter supplies a broader regional location. This is an IP-location control, separate from app location permissions. Apple: iPhone relay controls · Apple: covered network traffic
Read the provider's scope before adding an app
The FTC advises examining a VPN's permissions, encryption and information-sharing policy. Its operator becomes an important intermediary. A claim of anonymity does not remove the identifying information supplied to websites. FTC: VPN trust and limits
Keep the other controls in place
These controls address parts of the connection. Mozilla describes encrypted DNS as protection for name lookups. Apple identifies particular relay-covered traffic. Use the separate browser and app guides to review collection in those layers. Mozilla: encrypted DNS scope · Apple: covered network traffic
