Practical privacy steps

Review Google history, media and audio controls

Choose the right branch for your account, review saved media and Assistant audio separately, and inspect the scope before deleting activity.

Conceptual illustration

Start with the settings your account shows

  1. Open Google's current history overview. If Search Services History is available, use that branch. If it is absent, Google says the relevant Search-service history and recommendations still use Web & App Activity during the gradual rollout. Google: settings rollout and scope

For the new Search Services History controls

  1. Open My Google Activity and select Search Services History. Review its on/off setting. When turning it off, distinguish Turn off from Turn off and delete activity, then inspect the activity selected before confirming deletion. Google: Search Services History
  2. When Search Services History is on, review Save Media and Allow review of saved media separately. Their purposes differ. Review the explanation and existing saved items before deciding which box to change. Google: saved media and review controls

For the documented Assistant audio control

  1. Google's computer instructions show Google Account > Data & privacy > History settings > Web & App Activity > Include voice and audio activity. Review that checkbox for Assistant audio saved to the account. Existing recordings need a separate deletion decision. Google: Assistant audio setting

Choose a narrow deletion scope when appropriate

  1. In My Activity, use date and product filters to find the intended items. Google describes deleting one item or the filtered results. Inspect those results before confirming; a general All time action has a broader scope. Google: deleting activity and its scope
  2. Review an activity setting's Auto-delete controls if a time-based rule is wanted. Google's deletion help describes choosing the retention period and confirming it. Check which activity category that rule covers. Google: deleting activity and its scope

Review personalization independently

Google's new overview separates Personalized Recommendations from saving Search Services History. It shows Google Account > Data & privacy > Personalization settings for that control. Do not assume a history-saving choice also sets every personalization option. Google: settings rollout and scope

Keep old-data and other-service limits in view

Google's saved-media help says earlier media can remain usable unless deleted, and already selected training data can remain disconnected from the account. Media review off also has limited-purpose exceptions. Choose the history and media controls according to their stated scope. Google: saved media and review controls

Google's general retention policy includes staged deletion, backup retention and business/legal exceptions. It does not describe an instant purge of every retained copy. Google: retention and deletion process

Questions and answers

Should old recordings be reviewed separately from a switch?

Google's Assistant audio help says turning off its saving setting does not delete previously saved audio. Google: Assistant audio setting

Does My Activity cover browser history and every other store?

Google's deletion help identifies other storage locations and separately notes that browser history can remain. Google: deleting activity and its scope

Does the new history control apply to past activity automatically?

Google's history guide says past history can remain usable unless deleted and follows the selected auto-delete rule. Google: Search Services History
