Review browser sync before clearing history
Inspect the correct account and data categories in Chrome, Edge and Safari. Decide whether the goal is stopping future sync, clearing a device or reviewing cloud records.

Inspect Chrome account-saving choices
Google's current Computer instructions place saved-data choices under the account name. Google: current saved-data controls and passphrase limits
- In Chrome, open More, Settings, then You and Google. Select the account name and inspect what is saved in that Google Account, including the separate History and tabs choice. Change only the categories that match the intended goal. Google: current saved-data controls and passphrase limits
Keep account activity separate from browser storage
Google describes a distinct Web & App Activity use of qualifying Chrome history. Google: Chrome sign-in and account storage
- Compare the browser's saved-data selection with the Google Account's activity controls. Use the linked Google history guide for that separate purpose. Do not treat stopping future saving as proof that older account data has been deleted. Google: Chrome sign-in and account storage
Read passphrase consequences before considering a change
A custom Chrome passphrase has exclusions and affects recovery and device sign-in. Google: current saved-data controls and passphrase limits
- Read the official passphrase section before creating, changing or removing one. Google excludes Wallet methods and addresses and warns that a change deletes encrypted data and signs out devices. Do not use a reset as a casual privacy-cleanup step. Google: current saved-data controls and passphrase limits
Inspect Edge sync under the intended profile
Microsoft provides per-category computer and mobile sync choices. Microsoft: Edge sync categories and account scope
- On a computer, open Settings and more, Settings, Profiles, then Sync. On mobile, open Settings, select the profile and inspect Sync settings. Check which account and categories are selected before changing a toggle. Microsoft: Edge sync categories and account scope
Choose Edge clearing scope before the final action
Microsoft distinguishes local, synchronized and dashboard deletion. Microsoft: local, synced and cloud clearing
- For current-device-only clearing, Microsoft's instructions say to turn sync off first. Clearing selected synced data while signed in and syncing can remove it from other synced devices. Microsoft: local, synced and cloud clearing
- If clearing is the goal, inspect Privacy, search, and services, then Clear browsing data and Choose what to clear. Review the time range and categories before Clear now. Passwords and autofill are separate choices. Dashboard deletion needs separate consideration because it does not erase the device copy. Microsoft: local, synced and cloud clearing
Inspect Edge browsing-activity personalization separately
Microsoft's browsing-activity choice covers ads and other personalized experiences. Microsoft: separate browsing-activity personalization
- Open Settings, Privacy, search, and services, then Privacy. Inspect the control allowing browsing activity to personalize Microsoft services. Its prospective effect differs from deleting existing history or changing sync categories. Microsoft: separate browsing-activity personalization
Inspect Safari iCloud settings on each device
Apple's setup guide requires the same account and Safari enabled to access that account's iCloud Safari data. Apple: version-specific iCloud Safari settings
- On iPhone or iPad, inspect Settings, the account name, iCloud, then See All or Show All and Safari. On newer Macs, inspect System Settings, the account name, iCloud, then See All beside Saved to iCloud. Follow the installed-version instructions. Apple: version-specific iCloud Safari settings
Consider Safari cross-device deletion before clearing
Apple's Mac guide explains that history clearing propagates through qualifying iCloud Safari setup. Apple: Safari history deletion and independent records
- In Safari on Mac, inspect History, then Clear History and the time-period choice. Before confirming, consider the other synced devices and any history that needs retaining. This does not erase independent website records or downloaded files. Apple: Safari history deletion and independent records
Questions and answers
Is stopping future sync the same as deleting every cloud record?
Google documents account-data management as a separate task. Google: Chrome sign-in and account storage
Can I assume a Chrome passphrase covers Wallet addresses?
Google explicitly excludes those addresses and Wallet payment methods. Google: current saved-data controls and passphrase limits
Will clearing Safari history delete downloaded files?
Apple says the download list can be removed while the files remain. Apple: Safari history deletion and independent records
