Check the scope before changing access

These instructions follow current desktop Chrome and Firefox help, checked 10-23-2026. They are not phone-browser instructions. Browser releases can show different labels; Mozilla's current optional-permissions guide displays both Permissions and Permissions and data variants. Review Chrome extension site access

  1. In desktop Chrome, open More, then Extensions, then Manage extensions. Choose the extension's Details. Google: desktop extension controls
  2. Review site access. Choose On select or On specific sites where that meets the tool's purpose. Under Permissions, use Allowed sites to add or remove individual sites. Google: desktop extension controls
  3. Selection-only access covers the current tab or window when selected and needs selection again after it closes. Google: desktop extension controls
  4. Turn an unneeded extension off. To uninstall, choose Remove in Manage extensions and confirm Remove. Google: desktop extension controls

Review Firefox optional permissions

  1. Open the Firefox menu, then Extensions and themes, then Extensions. Select the extension's name and open Permissions or Permissions and data, using the label shown. Mozilla: optional extension permissions
  2. Review the listed permissions. Where Optional permissions for added functionality or Optional appears, turn off optional access you do not need. These toggles concern optional permissions. Mozilla: optional extension permissions
  3. To turn the extension off entirely, use its toggle in the Extensions list. To uninstall it, use its three-dot menu and choose Remove. Mozilla: disable or remove extensions

Keep site restrictions separate from other access

Google states that Chrome site-access changes do not affect lower-level VPN or proxy access. Mozilla separately describes permissions covering clipboard data, browser history and other capabilities. Restricting one permission is not a complete review. Google: desktop extension controls · Mozilla: extension permission meanings

Questions and answers

Can every Firefox permission be switched off individually?

The Mozilla guide describes toggles for optional permissions. Use the extension's disable or remove control when its overall access does not fit your needs. Mozilla: optional extension permissions · Mozilla: disable or remove extensions
