What browser extensions can see about your browsing
Extension permissions can expose page contents, entered information or browsing history. Access capability and proven data collection are different questions.

Page access can include information entered into a page
Mozilla explains that an extension with access across websites could read page content and information entered there, including login details. Legitimate tools such as password managers and content blockers can need broad access. A permission describes capability; it does not establish that a particular extension misused it. Different permissions expose different parts of the trail
Google distinguishes website-data access from browsing history, tab information and clipboard access. Its explanation says tab access can reveal visited URLs and page titles, while website-data permissions can allow reading or modifying the pages covered. Review the actual permission list rather than assuming all extensions have identical access. Google: what extension permissions allow
A documented case shows why privacy promises matter
The FTC's 06-27-2024 announcement described a final Avast order resolving allegations of browsing-data collection through browser extensions and antivirus software without adequate notice or consent. The final restrictions covered selling, disclosure and licensing of browsing data for advertising, alongside corrective measures. This historical enforcement case does not establish the behavior of a current extension. FTC: historical Avast final order · FTC: announcement date
Site restrictions have a defined scope
Chrome offers extension site-access controls, but Google says these do not affect extensions changing lower-level network access through VPN or proxy settings. Read other requested permissions too. Google: desktop extension controls
Questions and answers
Does a permission warning prove an extension is dangerous?
Google says the warning identifies possible access rather than proving danger. Decide whether the requested capability fits a tool you trust. Google: what extension permissions allow
Does every Firefox extension have the same access?
Mozilla lists distinct permissions for website content, history, clipboard, local files and other capabilities. Review the extension's requested permissions. Mozilla: extension permission meanings
