Snapchat location sharing and saved map history
Ghost Mode, Live Location, public map Snaps, Footsteps and visited places have different scopes. Understand what each control changes and what it leaves to review.

Ghost Mode is a map-audience control
Snapchat's Ghost Mode help says location can still be shared with Snap while hidden from the ordinary Map audience. It also warns that Snaps submitted to Snap Map can remain visible. A map-visibility setting should not be interpreted as a stop to all location collection or public posting. Snapchat: Ghost Mode and music-sharing timers
Snap's more detailed product notice expressly distinguishes Live Location: Ghost Mode hides location from others except recipients of separately shared Live Location. The notice also says public map submissions or place-tagged Spotlight content can appear outside Snapchat, and some map submissions can remain visible for years. These are different audiences and records. Snap: map audiences and public submissions
The audience help lists all friends, friends with exceptions, and selected friends as separate Map choices. It also describes a distinct Now Playing area when Spotify is linked. Review the chosen recipients instead of assuming a familiar privacy label covers every feature. Snapchat: choosing map recipients
Permission and provider-held information are different
Snap's Location notice describes retaining GPS locations for a period to improve features and save relevant places, as well as location attached to some saved or submitted content. It also says approximate country or city can sometimes be inferred from an IP address when location permission is disabled. No single retention deadline is supplied there. Snap: location collection and approximate inference
Snapchat's My AI help says general location can be available if it was shared with Snapchat or mentioned in the conversation, including while Ghost Mode is enabled. Turning off location permission can leave cached data, which its help treats through separate My AI data controls. Snapchat: My AI location and cached data
Private map histories have their own records
Footsteps help says this history is visible only to the user and records exploration when Ghost Mode is off. At first use, location-attached Memories can backfill Footsteps once. The guide provides separate choices for saving new Footsteps and clearing existing history. Visibility to friends and retaining a personal history are different questions. Visited Places can arise from tagging a place or from shared location data. Snap says the Visited list, My Top Places and Footsteps are private to the user. Place Visits remain for the account lifetime unless removed or location history is cleared. This statement is about that feature, not every Snapchat record. Travel updates and public content need separate attention
Travel Notifications can give location-sharing friends an arrival notice or a recent-city-move callout. The help gives a Ghost Mode exception for the departure city and says the recent-move callout can last up to 24 hours. A travel update is another consequence to review when choosing a location audience. Snapchat: travel updates and controls
The public-map deletion help says an owned Snap can be removed through Spotlight & Snap Map, but copies shared outside Snapchat may still appear there. A deletion action on the service does not establish that an outside recipient's copy was recalled. Snapchat: deleting an owned public map Snap
