Apple shares some destination information at the start
Apple says a destination Check In shares the destination and approximate arrival time with the selected friend when the session begins. Additional device information can become available if the session does not complete as expected. Apple: Check In recipients, encrypted contents and retention categories
Apple Limited and Full have different detail levels
Apple's iPhone guide puts location, network signal and battery details in Limited. Full adds the route plus unlock or Watch-removal detail. The iPhone guide describes the last time; Apple's personal-safety guide describes the location. Review the actual device explanation rather than treating either summary as an exhaustive field list. Encryption and retention describe different data categories
Apple describes shared Check In contents as end-to-end encrypted. It separately retains limited session-use information during the session and for up to 24 hours afterward. Its notice says downloaded Check In information can stay locally on the two participants' devices for up to seven days. Apple: Check In recipients, encrypted contents and retention categories
Pixel Safety Check can start emergency sharing after no response
Google describes a 60-second check-in alert. If no option is chosen, Emergency sharing begins. Contacts receive a name, a Maps real-time-location link, battery percentage and any provided message. If the phone loses signal or powers off, Google describes sharing the last known location at the scheduled time. Google: Pixel Safety Check, emergency-sharing recipients and controls
A changed connection can change the notification timing
Apple warns that losing service or power can lead to an early or delayed notification and access to the shared details. A session should not be treated as proof that a person or connection is continuously available. Apple: Check In data levels, adding time and canceling

Sources and scope
Official Apple and Google documentation checked 10-24-2026. Apple's Check In notice is dated December 12, 2025 and lists iOS 17 or later; the settings guide view selected iOS 27. Google's source is Pixel-specific and flags version, region and supervised-account limits. Retention periods refer to named session-use and local-download categories, not every possible recipient copy. No private session, contact, account, phone location or message was accessed or started. Apple's two guides describe the extra unlock or Watch-removal detail with different time versus location wording; that distinction is preserved rather than independently resolved.
