Wi-Fi identifiers and network privacy
Private Wi-Fi addresses and network tracking
Private or randomized Wi-Fi addresses change a network identifier. A stable private address and a rotating one have different scopes within and across networks.

A repeated Wi-Fi address can link network activity
Apple describes how a repeated Wi-Fi MAC address can help network observers connect device activity and location over time. Its private-address feature uses an address specific to each network. Apple: private Wi-Fi address modes, rotation and network settings
Fixed and rotating addresses provide different scopes
Apple's Mac guide says a fixed private address reduces tracking across networks while allowing tracking within that network. A rotating private address also reduces tracking within the network. These are stated privacy scopes, not anonymity guarantees. Apple: Mac private-address scope and managed settings
Apple rotation is not a new address for every connection
Apple documents a two-week rotation interval for its Rotating mode. Fixed mode keeps the private address stable. Off uses the hardware address. The three choices apply to the documented newer OS versions. Apple chooses Fixed by default for new WPA2-or-stronger networks and Rotating for weaker or open ones. Android can keep a randomized address stable
Android's framework documentation describes persistent randomization as the default. The address follows the network profile and can remain the same after forgetting and adding that network again. Android 12 and later can use non-persistent behavior in specified cases. Android: persistent and non-persistent MAC randomization
A network switch does not choose every Android randomization detail
Android's documentation says the ordinary network-details control enables or disables randomization for that network. It does not let the user choose the persistent or non-persistent type. Android: persistent and non-persistent MAC randomization
Questions and answers
Is a fixed private address the same as the hardware address?
Apple distinguishes Fixed from Off, which uses the hardware address. Apple: private Wi-Fi address modes, rotation and network settings
Does Android always change the address when a saved network is forgotten?
Its persistent framework behavior keeps the address tied to network-profile parameters. Android: persistent and non-persistent MAC randomization
Does a fixed Mac address stop tracking within that network?
Apple describes its main reduction as tracking across networks. Apple: Mac private-address scope and managed settings

Public Apple and Android documentation checked 10-24-2026. Apple's general help is dated December 5, 2025 and documents three modes for iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS Sequoia 15 and later. Android's framework page was updated October 9, 2026; implementation behavior does not establish every manufacturer's interface. This guide concerns network identifiers, with no independent packet-capture or anonymity test.
