Practical Wi-Fi identifier privacy
Review private Wi-Fi addresses on a phone or Mac
Review the address setting for the actual network. Distinguish Apple fixed and rotating modes from Android randomization controls, and keep managed-device limits in view.

Review the selected iPhone or iPad network
In Settings > Wi-Fi, open the information control beside the network. Apple documents Private Wi-Fi Address with Off, Fixed and Rotating on iOS 18 or iPadOS 18 and later; earlier versions have an on/off switch. Apple: private Wi-Fi address modes, rotation and network settings
Review the Mac network separately
In System Settings > Wi-Fi, open Details for the current network and review the private-address menu. For another network, Apple documents its More menu and Network Settings. Managed Macs may restrict changes. Apple: Mac private-address scope and managed settings
Find the Android network address
With Wi-Fi on, Google documents Settings > Network & internet > Internet, the settings control beside the network, then Randomized MAC address. Names vary by device; use manufacturer help if the route differs. Google: Android network, Private DNS and randomized address settings
Check the Android control without assuming Apple-style modes
Android's framework describes a per-network randomization control. Its ordinary settings do not choose persistent versus non-persistent behavior. Review the actual device's controls. Android: persistent and non-persistent MAC randomization
Review compatibility before disabling privacy
If a network or application fails with a private address, Apple recommends installing current software updates and trying again before deciding whether to turn the feature off. Apple: private Wi-Fi address modes, rotation and network settings
Keep network privacy choices in their proper scope
Apple's Mac documentation distinguishes fixed cross-network protection from rotating protection on the same network. Review the related DNS and browser guides for those separate controls. Apple: Mac private-address scope and managed settings
Questions and answers
Where does Google document the randomized address field?
In the selected network's settings. Google: Android network, Private DNS and randomized address settings
Can every managed Mac change this setting?
Apple says organization management can restrict it. Apple: Mac private-address scope and managed settings
Should private addresses be disabled as the first troubleshooting step?
Apple recommends software updates and another attempt first. Apple: private Wi-Fi address modes, rotation and network settings

Apple, Android framework and Google phone-help instructions checked 10-24-2026. The Apple modes are documented for the named OS versions and later; Google warns that some steps require Android 12 or later, while its address section describes Android 10 and later. Menus and administrator policies vary. No private network, phone address, router log or account was accessed, and settings were not physically tested.
