Dating app location and profile visibility
Tinder Discovery, Grindr distance labels and map visibility have different limits. Understand hiding, provider-held records and account deletion as separate choices.

Hiding a profile has feature-specific limits
Tinder's Discovery help, updated October 22, 2026, says disabling Discovery prevents the profile from being shown to new people while preserving existing matches and chats. It also gives an exception: people liked before the change can still see the profile and like back, producing a new match. A visibility control is not a guarantee that every previous interaction disappears. Tinder: Discovery visibility and prior likes
Grindr's settings guide separates Explore search visibility, distance display, Viewed Me and For You recommendations. It says hiding the distance label leaves the profile visible in the nearby Grid and sorted by distance, so others may still approximate distance. These switches address different audiences and cannot be treated as one universal hidden mode. Grindr: distance and visibility choices
A map pin and phone collection are different questions
Grindr's July 6, 2026 policy describes collecting location, including precise location with permissions, and using it for distances and map features. It warns that displayed distance can help another person determine location or identity. Device permission, distance display and the profile's continued ordering are separate parts of the disclosure. Grindr's current Map view help describes a limited test in selected cities, requiring app version 26.18 or later. It says map pins are randomized and provides a Less-to-More adjustment, plus a Show Me on Map choice. This is a provider description of the test, not an independent guarantee about a particular device or protection against every inference. Grindr: limited Map view test and privacy controls
An account export can contain more than a visible profile
Tinder's July 2026 export guide lists possible account details, settings, media, messaging, swipe and match activity, purchases, connected services and technical data. The contents vary with use, and the guide excludes some deleted information or information affecting another person's privacy or safety. The export is not necessarily a complete copy of every internal record. Tinder: account data access and export scope
Tinder's April 4, 2026 policy distinguishes a safety-retention window from longer retention of limited categories for legal, safety and dispute purposes. Its section 9 includes different clocks for closure and a ban. A profile becoming invisible is therefore different from the provider having no retained records. Tinder: retention after closure
Uninstalling, deleting and canceling are different actions
Tinder's deletion help says uninstalling the app does not delete the account and account deletion does not cancel an active subscription. It describes a 90-day profile-data safety window, a limited-market restoration test and later processing under the privacy policy. Read those qualifications before treating 90 days as a universal erasure deadline. Tinder: deletion, restoration and subscriptions
Grindr's help likewise distinguishes uninstalling from profile deletion and says deleting a profile does not cancel the paid subscription. It describes deletion as permanent and says a newly created profile does not recover the old data and chats. Review the official account and subscription routes separately.
