Copied content and connected devices

Where copied text can go through clipboard history and sync

Clipboard history, pinned items, Apple Universal Clipboard and supported Phone Link copying create different paths for copied text and images.

Windows can keep more than the latest copied item

Microsoft describes Windows clipboard history, pinned items and cloud sync tied to a Microsoft or work account. Its Windows 11 guide lists 25 history entries and says pinned items survive a restart and bulk clearing. Automatic sync and manually selecting text to sync are different options. Microsoft: Windows clipboard history, sync and clearing

Universal Clipboard can make a copy available nearby

Apple says Universal Clipboard automatically adds copied content to another nearby device when both use the same Apple Account, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Handoff. Content remains briefly or until another copy replaces it on either device. Apple does not give an exact universal duration in this article. Apple: Universal Clipboard conditions and duration

Handoff is a shared control

Apple documents Handoff as a requirement for Universal Clipboard and other Continuity features, including Sidecar and Universal Control. Reviewing Handoff therefore means considering more than clipboard convenience. The setting is documented separately on a Mac and on an iPhone or iPad. Apple: Handoff settings and dependent features

Android restricts clipboard access with specific exceptions

Google's Android 10 privacy documentation says clipboard access is limited to the app that currently has focus or the default input method editor, such as the selected keyboard. This restriction does not mean no app can read copied content. It is also different from an enabled cross-device copying feature. Google: Android clipboard access limits

A copied-text preview can expose the text on screen

Google documents a standard copying interface on Android 13 and later. Apps that copy sensitive content must mark it so the system can avoid displaying that content in the preview. This is an app implementation responsibility, not a guarantee that every copied secret is automatically recognized. Google: Android clipboard previews and sensitive-content marking

Automatic clearing has a limited scope

Google's secure-handling guide describes automatic clipboard clearing starting with Android 13. It distinguishes this from protections on older versions. That statement does not establish when a keyboard's own history, a pasted document or a synced copy is erased. Google: clipboard handling and automatic clearing

Phone Link can update the other clipboard before a paste

For supported Android devices, Microsoft says enabled Phone Link cross-device copying replaces clipboard content on both devices whenever something is copied on either one. The documented feature handles text and images and has device-specific requirements. This is a different setting from Windows clipboard history. Microsoft: supported Phone Link cross-device copying

Existing Phone Link features can be reviewed individually

Microsoft's setup help documents separate feature switches and says disabling a feature stops its related syncing until re-enabled. Cross-device copying is listed where supported. A feature switch should not be described as removing every existing file, message or permission in the connected-device relationship. Microsoft: reviewing existing Phone Link feature controls
