Write to the agency that holds the records
Texas OAG says to submit a written request to the governmental body that maintains the information. Use the public information officer or designee and the agency's designated address or approved submission method. Keep the request and proof of receipt. The OAG's own records channel is not a substitute for a local police department's channel. Texas OAG: making a request
Ask for existing governance records
The OAG explains that a request concerns existing information, rather than new answers, research or a newly created report. Adapt the template to policies, contracts, sharing agreements and narrowly dated audit logs that the agency actually holds. Texas OAG: making a request
Track the response, rather than assuming a fixed production date
Texas requires prompt handling. The OAG says the general 10-business-day framework can result in release, a written availability notice, a request for an Attorney General ruling, a no-records notice or a notice relying on an identified previous determination. It is not an unconditional promise of complete production within 10 business days. Texas OAG: response duties
The 2026 OAG handbook explains sections 552.221 and 552.301. It distinguishes production notices from the general deadline to seek an Attorney General ruling and notify the requester. Special procedures can apply. Preserve any clarification, cost or timing notices and respond as required. Texas OAG: 2026 handbook
Copy and adapt this request
Replace every bracketed field and narrow the date range. Check the agency's published instructions before sending. This site provides the template; it does not submit requests.

Subject: Texas Public Information Act request: plate-reader governance records
Under the Texas Public Information Act, I request copies of these existing records held by [agency] for [start date] through [end date]:
1. Plate-reader operating policies, retention schedules, audit procedures and training materials effective during the period.
2. Executed plate-reader equipment and data-service contracts, amendments, purchase orders and invoices during the period.
3. Existing lists of sharing partners and executed sharing agreements effective during the period.
4. Existing access or query audit logs for [narrow date range], subject to lawful redaction. This request seeks system-governance records rather than an individual's movement history.
Please provide an existing electronic format where available. This request does not seek a new report, answers to questions or legal research.
If production cannot be completed within the applicable period, please provide the required written availability notice. If withholding depends on an Attorney General ruling or a previous determination, please provide the applicable notice and identify the basis.
Please identify the legal basis for withheld portions and provide the remaining public information. Please notify me before charges exceed [$ amount].

Review redactions by record type
The 2026 handbook discusses motor-vehicle confidentiality and a specific provision for plate numbers in law-enforcement video. Avoid assuming all plate-related records have one disclosure rule. Ask the agency to identify the legal basis for withheld information and release the public portions. Texas OAG: 2026 handbook
If the response appears improper
The OAG's public request guide directs people who believe a response is improper to its Open Government Hotline. Use the current contact details in that official guide and have the request, receipt and correspondence ready. Texas OAG: making a request
