Start with safety and the alert's context
Apple's Personal Safety guide says to consider the safety consequences of changes before acting. If you feel unsafe, its guidance is to go to a safe public location and contact law enforcement. A response may require the item or its serial number. Apple: personal safety and trackers
Check Apple notification prerequisites
Apple lists iOS/iPadOS 17.5 or later for compatible third-party Bluetooth tracker alerts, with an older Find My-specific minimum. Review the full prerequisite checklist, including System Services. This guide follows documentation, not a particular installed build. Apple: unwanted-tracker alert instructions
- In Settings, check Privacy & Security, then Location Services. Review the linked Apple checklist's System Services prerequisite as well. Apple: unwanted-tracker alert instructions
- Check Settings, then Bluetooth. In Settings, Notifications, Tracking Notifications, check Allow Notifications. Apple says Airplane Mode prevents these notifications. Apple: unwanted-tracker alert instructions
Open the alert and locate the item if safe
- On iPhone or iPad, tap the notification, then Continue and Play Sound. Find Nearby can be offered on supported hardware. Follow the displayed directions. Apple: personal safety and trackers
- On Android, tap the notification to review its map and Play sound. After finding the item, open Next steps for its identification and manufacturer instructions. Save screenshots of the alert and map. Google: Android unknown tracker help
Use an Android manual scan for a nearby check
The route below is for Android 12 and later. Google documents a different settings route for older versions. Google: Android unknown tracker help
- Open Settings, Safety & emergency, Unknown tracker alerts, then Scan now. A scan is a nearby check, not proof of an entire journey. Google: Android unknown tracker help
Preserve identifiers and use the item's own instructions
Apple describes using an NFC-capable phone near an AirTag's white side to open its information page. That page can show the serial number and partial registration phone information. Save the information privately if needed for a report. Apple: unwanted-tracker alert instructions
Google warns that disabling some trackers can reset them and break their association with the original owner. Consider that evidence and safety consequence before following the manufacturer's instructions. Changing your phone's Bluetooth, Location or Airplane Mode does not disable the separate tracker. Google: Android unknown tracker help
A temporary pause has a narrower effect
Google's 12-11-2024 announcement describes Temporarily Pause Location for compatible network tags: it stops location contributions from that phone for up to 24 hours. It is not a network-wide shutdown. Check the current Android help for the supported tag and on-screen option; this feature does not apply to every Bluetooth tracker. Google: limited temporary pause feature
For a found item, Apple's safety guide directs users to Instructions to Disable and the model's displayed steps. Its guidance says current-location updates stop after the item is disabled. This guide does not supply a generic reset or battery-removal procedure for all models. Apple: personal safety and trackers
Questions and answers
Will turning off my phone's Bluetooth disable the item?
No. Google says phone radio or Location changes do not stop the separate tracker from sharing its location. Google: Android unknown tracker help
Is a missing Play Sound button proof there is no item?
Apple describes several reasons locating may be unavailable. Review the alert and, if safe, the belongings that traveled with you. Apple: personal safety and trackers
Is the temporary pause a permanent block for all trackers?
No. The announced pause is limited to supported tags, contributions from that phone and up to 24 hours. Google: limited temporary pause feature
