GM and OnStar: use the published controls
- If offered on a model-year 2025 or newer GM vehicle, review exterior-camera consent in Data and Privacy in the GM account. GM also describes related options in the vehicle's infotainment Privacy Settings. GM: U.S. privacy controls
- Check the infotainment Privacy Settings for an OnStar location-services control. GM says some model-year 2019 and later vehicles offer it. Emergency location collection can remain after the setting is disabled. GM: U.S. privacy controls
- For access or deletion, follow the official U.S. Consumer Privacy Request Form linked below, or call 1-866-697-7482. GM says it does not accept consumer privacy requests by email. Follow its verification instructions. GM: U.S. privacy controls
Before transferring a GM vehicle
GM recommends removing stored personal information, such as contacts and saved addresses, and transferring or canceling the account. Use the owner's manual for the vehicle's deletion or reset procedure. GM: U.S. privacy controls
A checklist for the vehicle service
- List the manufacturer account and connected services enrolled for the vehicle. Ask whether precise location and driving behavior are collected. These are the categories at issue in the GM case. FTC: GM decision and order
- Ask the service for its data-access and deletion process, and its collection and sharing opt-outs. For GM, the FTC order requires mechanisms in these areas with defined exceptions. FTC: GM decision and order
- Before changing a connected service, ask which safety and other features depend on it. Record the answer for the specific vehicle and the date you changed the setting. The order includes exceptions and technology-dependent controls. FTC: GM decision and order
Do not generalize one settlement
The GM and OnStar order is a specific enforcement action. Use it to identify questions, without assuming that another manufacturer has the same controls or is subject to that order. FTC: GM decision and order
Questions and answers
Does turning off the phone's location control the car?
Treat vehicle collection as separate. The FTC order addresses connected vehicle data and vehicle controls. FTC: GM decision and order
Does opting out mean all vehicle data is erased?
No. Request deletion separately and review the service's response and exceptions. FTC: GM decision and order
