Device biometrics and account identity

What Face ID and Windows Hello do with biometric data

Device authentication can keep a biometric template local while an account sign-in still identifies the user. Review the specific system, storage and separate camera features.

Face ID keeps its enrolled face data on the device

Apple says Face ID stores encrypted mathematical representations protected by the Secure Enclave. Its Face ID privacy notice says this data stays on the device and is not included in iCloud or other backups. Supported apps receive an authentication result rather than the enrolled face data. Windows Hello has local biometric storage

Microsoft describes Windows Hello biometric templates as local, encrypted data that does not roam or go to external servers. Some fingerprint sensors perform matching and store biometric data on the sensor module instead of in the Windows database. Microsoft: Windows Hello biometric storage and account authentication

Local biometrics do not make account sign-in anonymous

In Windows Hello for Business, a public key is registered with the identity provider and linked to the user account. Authentication uses the corresponding private key. Keeping the biometric template local does not remove that account association. Microsoft: Windows Hello biometric storage and account authentication

Attention detection is a separate feature

Apple says TrueDepth attention features can dim the display or lower alert volume even without Face ID enrollment. Their presence does not establish that a Face ID template has been enrolled. Apple: Face ID data, app authentication and attention features

The claim belongs to the named authentication system

These statements concern Apple Face ID and Microsoft Windows Hello. They do not describe every camera app or face-recognition service. Apple separately documents Face ID depth matching, passcode requirements and accessibility options; compatible hardware is also required for Windows Hello.
